Overview

Employed by PAGNY for NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, Kings County Hospital operates a world-renowned Level 1 Trauma Center, one of only three in Brooklyn, which serves 2.6 million residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island. The hospital is academically affiliated with SUNY Downstate Medical Center and trains their medical students and OBGYN residents.

Kings County is located in the East Flatbush/Prospect-Lefferts section of Brooklyn, close to the 2 and 5 subways. Our patients are diverse, with the majority being Afro-Caribbean. Most of our patients are native English speakers. Knowledge of French/Haitian Creole is helpful, but not required.

Responsibilities

The attending psychiatrist if the clinical lead of the assigned inpatient team and is responsible for all aspects of patient care on the team, including safety and quality.

 

Direct Patient Care

  1. Provide direct care for a specific number of patients on the unit, including appropriate and timely documentation.
  2. Complete admission assessment for all patients within 24hr of inpatient admission, and re-assess patients in a timely fashion. Document re-assessments in progress notes consistent with policy.
  3. Participate in treatment plan meetings and ensure timely documentation consistent with policy.
  4. Participate in Behavioral Codes on the unit, providing leadership to the staff and patient community
  5. Participate in Medical Codes on the unit until the Code Team arrives
  6. Ensure appropriate use of de-escalation, including appropriately and timely use of restrictive interventions, as per policy, to ensure patient safety.
  7. Work with all teams to monitor length of stay, particularly ensuring that
  8. Patients who are refusing medications are taken to court promptly, and that
  9. Patients who have reached their 18th day are referred for state hospitalization for continuing treatment
  10. Identify patients who would benefit from AOT and work with their team to ensure that the application is completed.
  11. Work with medical-consultation team ensure that medical problems are properly managed
  12. Ensure that legal statuses are up to date and accurate
  13. Participates and conduct tier reviews as per policy

 

Performance Improvement, Quality Assurance and Risk Management

  1. Participate in Performance, Quality Assurance and Clinical pertinence activities

 

Utilization Management

  1. Work with the UM department to conduct MD to MD reviews and participate in any appeals to ensure authorization of inpatient stay.
  2. Maintains focus on key strategic priorities including patient experience, access to care, increased market share, and improving financial stability

 

Regulatory Activities

  1. Assist in the preparation for surveys
  2. Maintain awareness of the standards for certification by the various regulatory agencies

Qualifications

  • Must be board eligible or board certified in Adult Psychiatry 
  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited school of medicine 
  • Completed residency training in an accredited program within Psychiatry
  • License to practice medicine in the State of New York
