Jonathan K. Mays, MD, MPH, MBA, FACOG. Deputy Director of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan

Jonathan K. Mays, MD, MPH, MBA, FACOG, is the Deputy Director of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. He has served as the Director of Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine since 2002 and the Deputy Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2019.

In honor of Women's Health Week, we spoke to Dr. Mays to learn more about his career dedicated to women's health at PAGNY.

PAGNY: Why did you choose a career in Obstetrics & Gynecology at PAGNY and NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan?

Dr. Mays: I did my OB/GYN residency training working with the underserved at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., during the height of the crack cocaine epidemic. I subsequently completed a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship in Westchester and dedicated my career to providing the highest quality of healthcare to inner-city populations. As such, I have been employed by PAGNY and NYC Health + Hospitals for more than 24 years.

I served as the Interim Chairman of the department for 12 months, which ended in November 2022. I was blessed to be able to perform and publish valuable clinical research which specifically addressed the community's needs in the areas of cervical insufficiency and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) during my tenure here.

PAGNY: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Dr. Mays: The most rewarding part of my job is the words of appreciation from our patients. The joy of knowing that lives have been impacted and dozens of pregnancies have had successful outcomes as a result of working with an outstanding team of equally dedicated and caring healthcare professionals.

Providers like Dr. Mays exemplify what it means to be a PAGNY physician. We commend him on his 24 years of service to New Yorkers and thank him for his leadership.
