Since 2016, Physician Affiliate Group of New York, P.C. (PAGNY) Research Day has elevated innovative research that is shaping the future of health care. This annual event brings together leading researchers, health care professionals, and students to showcase innovations transforming patient care.

Why We Invest in Research

Enhanced clinical knowledge enables our physicians to provide improved care for the most vulnerable New Yorkers within the nation's largest public health system. Our research initiatives also safeguard our most valuable asset – our physicians and allied health providers – by examining the factors that impact their well-being and introducing innovative programs. These efforts ensure they can continue delivering the highest quality patient care, even under the most challenging conditions.

Our Research division supports physicians conducting cutting edge health research by:

  • Seeking funding to support the research priorities of our physicians to study population health.
  • Providing programs to enhance the wellness of our health care workforce through education, engagement opportunities, and leadership training.
  • Advocating for underserved populations to receive the best health care and to improve the health of future generations.

Our Impact

PAGNY physicians and allied health professionals provide high quality, comprehensive health care in the city’s public hospitals and community based practices, treating over 1.8 million New Yorkers living below the poverty line and who have little or no health insurance. In addition to providing quality care, these physicians have been pioneers in developing treatments for pediatric AIDS prevention, effective trauma procedures, and much more.

Over the last decade, PAGNY Research has:

  • Provided wellness programs, personal protective equipment, disinfection supplies, and COVID-trauma-relief programs for front-line health care workers.
  • Secured $524K Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP) grant to conduct a study on novel immunotherapies in malignant melanoma and to provide mentorship to ECRIP fellows in using molecular diagnostic methodologies, integrating them into their practices to improve patient care.
  • Led physician coaching programs aiding in the training and graduating of physician leaders to expertly coach medical teams, facilitating resilience and excellence, advancing many of them to greater leadership roles at their hospitals.
  • Secured $2.4M in private funding for the NYC Teen Options to Prevent Pregnancy (TOPP) program, including a study focusing on the prevention of teen pregnancy in New York City, led by Dr. Chinyere Anyaogu, MD, MPH, FACOG, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx.
  • Built Physician Wellness Centers at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem and NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx.
  • Conducted in-person and virtual Grand Rounds Educational series to PAGNY clinicians and non-clinical staff across NYC Health + Hospitals, emphasizing physician well-being and social determinants of health, while providing opportunities for continuing education credits.
  • Secured funding for physician-led community health initiatives aimed at reaching underserved communities. These programs involve training barbers to offer education and referrals for HIV testing to customers, as well as implementing an anti-violence leadership initiative among youth.
  • Obtained funding for A Mother’s Heart (AMH), a screening program designed to identify and reduce morbidity and mortality in pregnant women related to cardiovascular disease. Led by Dr. Kecia Gaither, MD, MPH, FACOG, Director of Perinatal Services/Maternal Fetal Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.
  • Launched the Attack Asthma in Kids website, a unique asthma-awareness platform designed for individuals with low health literacy, and started a childhood asthma prevention program in Harlem. Led by Dr. Alexie Puran, Pediatric Emergency Specialist, NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem.
