More than 600 people gathered at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi on May 6, 2015, for the 17th Annual Warren Wetzel, MD, Trauma/Emergency Medicine Symposium. Sponsored by the North Bronx Health Network, the symposium is the only regional conference dedicated solely to the management of trauma patients. It attracts nationally recognized faculty.

The event was organized by PAGNY’s Dr. John McNelis, Network Chief of Surgery; PAGNY’s Dr. Sheldon Teperman of the Surgery Department; and PAGNY’s Dr. Peter Grueber of the Emergency Medicine Department. Janet Cucuzzo, RN, of the Health and Hospitals Corporation, collaborated with them

“The 2015 Trauma Symposium brought together an internationally renowned faculty who presented state-of-the-art trauma-and-emergency care,” Dr. McNelis said. “The hidden beauty of this symposium is that it affords our attendees the opportunity to interact with these world experts on a very personal level.”

The goal of the symposium is to raise awareness for physicians and nurses of the many complex management strategies available for treating injured patients in efforts to minimize complications and mortality. With 18 trauma centers in New York City, the symposium serves as an important venue in the exchange of science and ideas related to trauma treatment.

The educational goals of the symposium were to provide a better understanding in the use of drugs and medical devices that aid in the treatment of trauma; better management of emergency rooms to improve trauma treatment; and an examination of the latest innovations in pediatric-injury prevention.

The symposium is named for innovative and widely respected surgeon Warren Wetzel, MD, Chief of Trauma Surgery at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi from 1986 to 1994.
